The first reference to smoking tobacco was jotted into Christopher Columbus's notebook today in 1492 as he watched American Indians drying and smoking some weeds. Congress called for a union today - The United States of America - in 1777. Zebulon Pike caught sight of the mountain that bears his name in Colorado. Pitman published his shorthand book. NBC Radio went on the air with 25 stations from NY to KS. The trades union movement in America was inaugurated today in 1881 with the formation of what later would be called the AFofL. Famous people who died today include Johannes Kepler, Lionel Barrymore, Margaret Mead and Stokely Carmichael. Celebrating birthdays: Daniel Barenboim, Ed Asner, and Catherine of Braganza.
