Traitor Nathan Hale was hanged today in 1776 mumbling "I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country," and six women and a man were hanged in Salem, Massachusetts for being witches in 1692. Abe Lincoln declared all slaves to be free on January 1st, 1863. 1950 saw the first nonstop transatlantic jet flight from England to Maine. "Fiddler on the Roof" opened at the Majestic Theatre in 1964 and Willie Mays became only the second ball player after the Babe to hit over 600 home runs in his career. The Iran Iraq war began today in 1980. The Justice Department filed a massive lawsuit against the tobacco industry for fraud. Born: Anne of Cleves, Michael Faraday and Erich von Stroheim.
